Antler Arches have been gates to the Jackson Town Square since 1960. The antlers are from elk that winter on the National Elk Refuge. About 7,500 elk spend each winter on the refuge. The bull shed their antlers each spring. Antlers are picked up by local Boy Scouts & sold by public auction in this square each May. All four arches were built by the Jackson Hole Rotary Club. (Don't even think about removing them $750.00 fine for removing just one).
Day 11 started with wonderful massages at the White Buffalo Club. The rest of the day sort of went downhill from there. After reading the trail guide, I (Steve) picked a trail that would give us wonderful views of the Teton range from a distance. Rene started off taking pictures from the road near the trail head of Lower Sheep Creek Canyon trail. The pictures went fine and then we started the hike. Unfortunately, I was confused by the directions for the trail and took the wrong fork which led us onto a steep and getting steeper canyon wall. We should have turned back, but I insisted that we continue. We got to a point on the canyon wall where the trail disappeared. We were in a very frightening position as one slip and we would tumble 400 feet directly down the canyon. We were able to very slowly and carefully retrace our steps and make it back to the trail head safely. Another lesson learned: listen to your mate when she tells you it time to turn around. Whew!!!
